Firm aims to drive popularity of collaborative robot

ROBOTICS company Universal Robots has made a big stride to encourage further adoption of its collaborative robots among the burgeoning manufacturing sector in South China with the inauguration of a new office in Shenzhen on Friday.

The office, located in Bao’an District, is able to accommodate a much bigger team of personnel encompassing technical support, customer service, sales and back-office operation, according to the company.

The office is also equipped with a state-of-the-art training center, of which the design and facilities are on par with the configuration of the one in the company’s Denmark headquarters.

“Shenzhen is arguably the most dynamic economic powerhouse as well as technology hub in southern China. Our strengthened presence in Shenzhen surely will help Universal Robots forge compelling credentials to market its solutions to the thriving manufacturing sector of China,” said Adam Sobieski, general manager of Universal Robots’s China division, at the new office’s inauguration ceremony.

According to William Tian, sales director of Universal Robots China, the company has sold more than 31,000 units of its robots worldwide as of the end of last year. In 2018, the company had revenue of US$234 million.

“As collaborative robots are a key driving force of industrial automation while manufacturing is a pivotal part of the Chinese economy, we are highly positive towards its potential in this market,” Tian added.

According to the International Federation of Robotics, China has had the most industrial robots in operation globally since 2016. By 2020, China is expected to produce 150,000 industrial robot units and have 950,300 industrial robots in operation.

Foreign robot makers have also gained immensely from China’s growing investment in smart manufacturing. According to statistics from the China Machinery Industry Federation, the combined share of international robot makers in the Chinese market jumped to 73.2 percent in 2017 from 67.3 percent in 2016.
